Senior Quantity Surveyor – Contract Role
Location: London (Office-based with project travel across London and the South)
Contract Type: Long-term contract
Sector: Civil Engineering / Rail
Client: Tier 1 Main Contractor

Due to sustained growth and increasing project demands, we are working in partnership with a leading Tier 1 contractor to recruit an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor. This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing commercial team delivering a major infrastructure programme across Network Rail's Southern Route.

This is a full-time, office-based role, requiring regular engagement with projects situated throughout London and the South of England. The successful candidate will take a leading role in managing the commercial and contractual aspects of multiple schemes within a long-term, multi-phase framework programme.

Role Overview:

As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the commercial delivery and performance of a portfolio of projects at various stages of development. These projects may include works in buildings, structures, earthworks, and drainage.

You will provide commercial leadership and strategic input, ensuring robust cost control, risk management, and contract administration across your assigned projects. The role also involves mentoring junior staff and liaising closely with key stakeholders including clients, subcontractors, and internal delivery teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the commercial management of multiple infrastructure projects from inception through to final account.

  • Prepare and manage project budgets, forecasts, and cost plans.

  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of valuations, variations, and final accounts.

  • Draft and manage subcontracts, including negotiation and administration.

  • Support procurement processes and supplier engagement.

  • Conduct commercial risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Collaborate with project teams to provide commercial advice and ensure cost-effective delivery.

  • Produce regular internal and client-facing commercial reports.

  • Mentor and support junior Quantity Surveyors and Commercial Assistants.

About You:

  • Proven experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, ideally within Civil Engineering or Rail sectors.

  • Strong background working for a main contractor or established subcontractor.

  • Familiarity with delivering projects within a framework environment is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrable experience managing a portfolio of infrastructure schemes at different lifecycle stages.

  • Proficient in subcontract drafting and commercial reporting.

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills with the ability to influence both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Experience mentoring junior team members.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.

  • Professional accreditation (or working towards) with RICS, CIOB, or ICES is preferred.

  • HND qualifications in relevant fields such as Building Studies, Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering will also be considered.

  • Excellent knowledge of standard forms of contract (e.g., NEC, JCT).

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key commercial role on a high-profile programme, working with a market-leading contractor and shaping the future of UK infrastructure.

If you're an enthusiastic self-starter looking for your next long-term contract, we’d love to hear from you.
